How difficult is the NCA-GENL certification exam?

The exam is entry-level but requires solid understanding of LLM fundamentals. The difficulty is moderate to challenging for those new to generative AI. Core ML Knowledge (30%) is the largest domain, testing transformer architecture, attention mechanisms, and neural network fundamentals.

What is the passing score?

NVIDIA does not publicly disclose the exact passing score. The exam contains 50-60 questions with 60 minutes to complete.

How is NCA-GENL different from NCP-GENL?

NCA-GENL (Associate) is entry-level, focusing on foundational LLM concepts and basic implementation. NCP-GENL (Professional) is intermediate-level, requiring 2-3 years of production experience and covering advanced topics like distributed training and model optimization.

What training is recommended?

NVIDIA recommends free resources like 'The Fast Path to Developing With LLMs' (50 min video) and 'Running Your Own LLM' (40 min video), plus self-paced courses on deep learning fundamentals and transformer-based NLP ($30-$90).

Do I need prior certifications?

No prerequisite certifications are required. This is designed as an entry-point into NVIDIA's AI certification ecosystem.

What technologies should I know?

You should be familiar with Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow, transformers library, LangChain basics, and NVIDIA tools (NIM, NeMo, RAPIDS). Understanding of cuDF and RAPIDS workflows is also tested.

Is this certification recognized by employers?

Yes, this is an official NVIDIA certification providing a verified credential in generative AI. It demonstrates foundational competency to employers and serves as a stepping stone to professional-level certifications.

Can I take the exam remotely?

Yes, the exam is delivered online and remotely proctored via the Certiverse platform.

What is the exam fee?

The exam costs $125 USD. NVIDIA occasionally offers promotional discounts.

Question 1 of 150/15 answered

Why do decoder-only architectures like GPT use causal (masked) self-attention?

To compress the KV cache memory footprint during inference by quantizing stored key-value pairs to lower precision formats like INT8 or FP8

To reduce the computational complexity of the self-attention mechanism by approximately half, since only the lower triangular portion of the attention matrix needs to be calculated

To enable bidirectional attention patterns where each token can attend to both preceding and following positions, improving contextual understanding of the full sequence

To prevent the model from attending to future tokens during training, ensuring each position only depends on previous positions
