AWS Cost Optimization Strategies for SAA-C03 (2026)

AWS Cost Optimization Strategies for SAA-C03 (2026)

Cost optimization is 20% of SAA-C03, and its questions have a distinctive shape: several options all "work," and you must pick the cheapest that still meets the requirement. That last clause matters, because the exam punishes cutting cost below the requirement (choosing a single-AZ deployment when the stem demands HA) as hard as it punishes overspending. This guide covers the pricing models and cost patterns AWS tests.

For the full exam map, see the domains breakdown; the cheat sheet condenses these rules for review.

EC2 Purchasing: The Biggest Lever

Compute is usually the largest bill, and the purchasing model is the biggest cost decision:

EC2 purchasing options

OptionDiscount vs On-DemandCommitmentBest for
On-Demand0% (baseline)NoneUnpredictable, short-lived, spiky workloads
Savings Plansup to ~72%1 or 3 years of $/hour spendSteady, predictable usage (flexible across instance types)
Reserved Instancesup to ~72%1 or 3 years, specific configSteady usage on a known instance type
Spot Instancesup to ~90%None; can be reclaimed with 2-min noticeFault-tolerant, interruptible work (batch, CI, big-data)

The selection logic:

  • Steady, always-on load -> Savings Plans (or Reserved Instances). "Runs 24/7 for the next two years" is a commitment-discount answer.
  • Interruptible, fault-tolerant work -> Spot. "Batch processing that can restart" or "stateless workers that tolerate interruption" is Spot, the deepest discount.
  • Unpredictable or short-term -> On-Demand.
  • Mix: baseline on Savings Plans, burst on Spot or On-Demand, is a common cost-optimal architecture.

The trap: Spot for a workload that cannot tolerate interruption (a stateful database, a user-facing tier without failover) is wrong despite being cheapest. Match the model to the workload's tolerance, then minimize.

Serverless and Right-Sizing

  • Lambda eliminates paying for idle servers; for sporadic or event-driven workloads it is often the cost answer over an always-on EC2 instance.
  • Fargate removes cluster management overhead for containers when "don't pay to manage servers" is the goal.
  • Right-sizing: over-provisioned instances are pure waste. Compute Optimizer recommends smaller instances; Trusted Advisor flags idle and underused resources. "Instances run at 10% utilization" wants right-sizing, not a bigger commitment.
  • Auto Scaling saves money by scaling in when demand drops, not just out when it rises.

Storage and Data-Transfer Costs

Storage cost questions overlap the S3 storage classes guide:

  • S3 Intelligent-Tiering for unknown access patterns; lifecycle policies to Glacier for archives.
  • EBS: gp3 is cheaper and more flexible than gp2; delete unattached volumes and old snapshots (Trusted Advisor flags them).

Data transfer is the hidden cost the exam probes:

  • Data transfer OUT to the internet is charged; inbound is free. Egress-heavy designs get expensive.
  • NAT gateway bills per hour and per GB processed. A frequent "reduce cost" answer is a Gateway VPC endpoint for S3/DynamoDB, which removes that traffic from the NAT path for free.
  • Cross-AZ and cross-Region transfer costs money; keeping chatty traffic within an AZ, or using CloudFront to cache at the edge, reduces it.
  • CloudFront can lower cost and improve performance by serving cached content from edge locations instead of repeatedly from the origin.

Cost Visibility Tools

The exam expects you to know which tool answers which question:

Cost tools

Analyze and forecast spend by service/tagAWS Cost Explorer
Detailed line-item billing dataAWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR)
Alert when spend crosses a thresholdAWS Budgets
Flag idle/underused resources and savingsAWS Trusted Advisor
Right-sizing recommendationsAWS Compute Optimizer

"Get alerted before the bill exceeds $5,000" is AWS Budgets; "understand which services drive cost over time" is Cost Explorer; "find resources we are wasting money on" is Trusted Advisor.

Cost meets every domain

Cost questions reuse services from every other domain, viewed through a price lens. The 8-week study plan covers cost in week 7 alongside performance, and the study guide works the pricing models with examples.

How This Shows Up on the Exam

  • A workload runs 24/7 for years on a fixed instance type, minimize cost. (Reserved Instances or a Savings Plan.)
  • Nightly batch processing that can restart if interrupted, cheapest compute. (Spot Instances.)
  • A private subnet's heavy S3 traffic runs up NAT gateway data-processing charges. (Gateway VPC endpoint for S3.)
  • Instances sit at ~10% CPU. (Right-size with Compute Optimizer; do not buy a bigger reservation.)
  • Alert the team before monthly spend passes a set limit. (AWS Budgets.)
  • Global users repeatedly fetch the same static assets from an origin. (CloudFront: cheaper and faster.)

Key Takeaways

  • Match EC2 purchasing to workload: Savings Plans/Reserved for steady, Spot for interruptible, On-Demand for unpredictable
  • Never choose the cheapest option that fails the requirement (Spot for a stateful tier is wrong)
  • Right-size and scale in; idle capacity is the most common waste the exam flags
  • Data transfer out and NAT per-GB charges are hidden costs; Gateway endpoints and CloudFront cut them
  • Know the cost tools: Budgets (alerts), Cost Explorer (analysis), Trusted Advisor (waste), Compute Optimizer (right-sizing)
