Six weeks at 8 to 10 hours per week takes a working USD practitioner to a confident NCP-OUSD pass. The plan front-loads composition, because it is 23% of the exam and everything else depends on understanding it, then works outward through the pipeline core and the smaller domains. Hands-on usdview practice threads through every week, and practice exams run as a feedback loop rather than a final cram.
For the exam's structure, read the complete NCP-OUSD guide; for topic-level depth, keep the domains breakdown open as you work.
Adjust for your background
Coming from a technical-director or pipeline-engineer role? The pipeline and data-modeling domains will feel familiar; spend more time on composition subtleties and the customizing-USD extension topics. Coming from a technical-artist background? Composition and hands-on usdview are your fastest wins, and the Python/pipeline domains need the most new study.
The Schedule
Composition Foundations & Diagnostic
Week 1- •Read the NCP-OUSD domains breakdown end to end
- •Start NVIDIA Learn OpenUSD: Creating Composition Arcs
- •Master LIVERPS: the order AND what each arc does
- •Take a full-length diagnostic practice exam and map your eight-domain gaps
Composition Deep Dive
Week 2- •References vs payloads (loading behavior)
- •VariantSets, inherits, specializes: when to use each
- •Sublayers and local opinion strength
- •Hands-on: author a layered .usda scene, resolve opinions in usdview
Data Modeling & Exchange
Week 3- •Prims, properties, primvars; typed vs applied schemas
- •TimeSamples and animation; metadata
- •Data exchange: FBX/glTF/Alembic mapping and round-trip fidelity
- •USD file formats: .usda vs .usdc vs .usdz
Pipeline Development
Week 4- •Asset resolution with ArResolver
- •Pipeline automation with the Python USD API
- •Asset management, versioning, collaborative workflows
- •Hands-on: script a small stage traversal and edit in Python
Aggregation, Viz, Debugging & Custom
Week 5- •Content aggregation: scenegraph and point instancing, kind
- •Visualization: UsdGeom/UsdShade/UsdLux, Hydra, MaterialX
- •Debugging: usdview, usdcat, usdchecker, arc tracing, profiling
- •Customizing USD: custom schemas and file-format plugins
Rehearsal & Exam
Week 6- •One timed full-length practice exam per day, error-log review between
- •Re-drill composition and your other weakest domain
- •Reach 72%+ on three consecutive timed exams
- •Confirm Certiverse setup, rest the final day, sit the exam

Week-by-Week Notes
Week 1 is about composition and your map. Composition is 23% of the exam and the foundation the other domains build on, so start there and start with LIVERPS. Then take the diagnostic exam before you feel ready; the per-domain score across eight domains tells you where to invest. Preporato's NCP-OUSD practice exams split scores by domain automatically.
Week 2 makes composition hands-on. Reading LIVERPS is not enough; you internalize it by authoring layers and watching opinions resolve. Build a .usda stage in a text editor, add a reference, override it, add a variant and a payload, and use usdview's composition inspector to see which arc wins. Break it on purpose. This week is where the exam's biggest domain is won.
The core exercise
Author a stage with a base layer and two sublayers, add a reference to a second asset, then a VariantSet, then convert the reference to a payload and unload it. At each step, open usdview and check the composition and layer panes. Watching the resolved result change as you add stronger and weaker arcs is the single most effective composition study you can do.
Week 3 covers modeling and exchange. Typed vs applied schemas is the modeling concept the exam tests most, so nail the "is it" versus "adds a capability to it" distinction. On the exchange side, focus on which formats round-trip cleanly and the three USD file formats (.usda readable, .usdc fast/binary, .usdz packaged delivery).
Week 4 is the pipeline core. ArResolver (runtime asset resolution), Python automation, and versioning are where technical artists usually have the biggest gap. Even reading-level Python USD fluency (open a stage, traverse prims, author an opinion) pays off; script a small example so the API is not abstract.
Week 5 sweeps the four smaller domains. Instancing and kind (aggregation), UsdGeom/Shade/Lux and Hydra (visualization), the usdview/usdcat/usdchecker toolkit (debugging), and custom schemas/plugins (customizing). Individually small, together 35% of the exam, and mostly recognition once you know the vocabulary.
Week 6 is rehearsal only. No new material; consolidating composition and the pipeline core beats adding anything new. Timed exams train pacing, and your error log directs the review. Exam-day tactics are in the first-attempt guide.
