NCP-AIN Study Plan: 6-Week Preparation Schedule (2026)

Six weeks at 8 to 10 hours per week is enough to take a working network engineer from zero NVIDIA-specific knowledge to a confident NCP-AIN pass. That estimate assumes you already understand routing, switching, and QoS from operational experience; the plan spends your hours on what is new, which is the NVIDIA fabric stack on both the InfiniBand and Ethernet sides.

The plan follows the exam's own weights. Spectrum and InfiniBand each get more than a full week, troubleshooting gets a week, and the three small domains share one. Practice exams run through the whole schedule as a feedback loop rather than a final-week cram. For the exam's structure and registration details, see the complete NCP-AIN guide; for topic-level depth on each domain, keep the domains breakdown open as you work.

Adjust for your background

This schedule assumes an Ethernet background, which describes most candidates. If you come from HPC and already run InfiniBand fabrics, swap the depth of weeks 2 and 3: skim InfiniBand, and spend the recovered hours on BGP-EVPN, DCQCN, and Spectrum-X platform specifics.

The Schedule

Foundations & Diagnostic

Week 1
  • Read the NCP-AIN domain breakdown end to end
  • Start NVIDIA Academy: InfiniBand Essentials
  • Learn why AI traffic breaks enterprise assumptions: east-west collectives, loss sensitivity, job completion time
  • Take a full-length diagnostic practice exam untimed and map your per-domain gaps

InfiniBand Deep Dive

Week 2
  • Complete InfiniBand Essentials; start InfiniBand Network Administration
  • Master the subnet manager: discovery, LID assignment, forwarding tables
  • Study PKey partitioning, service levels, virtual lanes, credit-based flow control
  • Learn UFM deployment, monitoring views, and HA pairs

InfiniBand Operations + SHARP

Week 3
  • Finish InfiniBand Network Administration
  • Study adaptive routing and SHARP in-network aggregation
  • Drill the diagnostic family: ibstat, ibnetdiscover, ibdiagnet, perftest
  • Take a timed InfiniBand-focused practice run and update your error log

Spectrum & Lossless Ethernet

Week 4
  • Start NVIDIA Academy: Cumulus Linux Essentials
  • Build a virtual leaf-spine fabric in NVIDIA Air with NVUE
  • Master the lossless triad: PFC, ECN, DCQCN, and their failure modes
  • Configure BGP-EVPN multi-tenancy in Air; study Spectrum-X and DOCA/SuperNIC features

Troubleshooting + Small Domains

Week 5
  • Study WJH drop reasons and NetQ fabric validation
  • Practice diagnostic sequences: symptom to tool to counter to fix
  • Cover NVUE workflows, Ansible automation, and ZTP
  • Review rail-optimized topology, bandwidth planning, Network Operator, Multus, SR-IOV

Rehearsal & Exam

Week 6
  • Take one timed full-length practice exam per day, alternating with error-log review
  • Re-drill your two weakest domains using the cheat sheet
  • Hit 72%+ on three consecutive timed exams
  • Confirm Certiverse setup, rest the final day, and sit the exam

Week-by-Week Notes

Week 1 is about the map, and the diagnostic exam draws it. Take a full practice exam before you feel ready. The score is irrelevant; the per-domain results are the whole point, because they tell you whether the default schedule fits or needs rebalancing. Preporato's NCP-AIN practice exams break scores out by domain automatically.

Weeks 2 and 3 carry the heaviest new material. For an Ethernet engineer, InfiniBand is a genuinely different model: the fabric is centrally computed by a subnet manager, flow control is credit-based, and isolation is a fabric-level partition rather than a tag on a frame. Give the concepts time to settle, and anchor each one to its operational tool (the subnet manager to UFM, partitioning to PKey config, health to ibdiagnet output).

Week 4 should be mostly keyboard time. NVIDIA Air is free and runs real Cumulus Linux images, so every Spectrum topic in the blueprint except the physical SuperNIC can be practiced live: NVUE staging and apply workflows, BGP-EVPN bring-up, QoS and buffer configuration, and breaking PFC on purpose to watch the counters react. Configuration you have typed survives exam pressure far better than configuration you have read.

Week 5 turns knowledge into sequences. Troubleshooting questions give a symptom and ask for the next step, so drill in that shape: half-bandwidth between two nodes (check link speed and width with ibstat, then symbol errors, then run perftest), silent packet loss on the Ethernet side (WJH for the drop reason, then buffer or ECN threshold), a new switch that never pulls its config (walk the ZTP sequence).

Week 5 — Hands-on labs

Operator-stack rep for the Kubernetes domain

One pass through this lab covers the operator pattern the Kubernetes Integration questions assume: Helm release, DaemonSets, node feature labels, and a device plugin exposing a schedulable resource.

Week 6 is rehearsal, and only rehearsal. No new material. Timed exams train the 100-seconds-per-question pace that scenario stems threaten, and the error log tells you what to review between attempts. The 72%-three-times target leaves margin above whatever NVIDIA's undisclosed passing bar is. Exam-day tactics live in the first-attempt guide.

Master These Concepts with Practice

Our NCP-AIN practice bundle includes:

  • 7 full practice exams (455+ questions)
  • Detailed explanations for every answer
  • Domain-by-domain performance tracking

Weekly Rhythm That Makes It Stick

The plan fits in 8 to 10 hours per week structured like this:

  • Two weeknight sessions (2 hours each): course modules and reading, always ending with 10 practice questions on the day's topic
  • One weekend block (3-4 hours): hands-on work in Air or Kubernetes, plus the week's timed practice run
  • Daily 15 minutes: error-log review. This is the highest-leverage quarter hour in the whole plan

Consistency beats volume here. Ten hours spread across a week builds recall that a single ten-hour Saturday cannot.

Start with the Diagnostic

Everything in this plan calibrates off the week 1 diagnostic exam, so that is the concrete first step. Preporato's NCP-AIN prep includes 7 full-length practice exams with 420 questions, explanations for every answer, and the per-domain tracking this schedule depends on.
